Elle Decor: Modern Life Concept House Revealed

Casa Sugar posted some photos of the Modern Life Concept House that debuted Friday in New York. I heard it was a madhouse! It is probably no shock that my favorite room was done by Lee Kleinhelter...

I also loved this room by Carrier & Company

St. Elmo's Fire

I watched St. Elmo's Fire over the weekend. Man is that one hell (said in a whisper) of a good movie! I'm totally going to incorporate "Aboogaboogabooguhuhuh" into my everyday vocabulary. If you know me or are a faithful reader of my blog you will know how obsessed I am with movies and that one of my dreams was/is to do set design. [If anyone reading knows how I can get involved doing this in Charleston, please let me know. I have tried several avenues and I've not had any success. I will get coffee for the set designer of a movie being filmed here...just want to be involved and learn!] So one of the things I love most about this movie is how the perspective character's apartments' represent the characters so well. Let's take a look, shall we?

Alec and  Leslie define the ultimate yuppie couple! They have this huge loft apartment probably in the most up and coming neighborhood of D.C. The Nike poster as art on their wall is a literal nod to their love of status and consumption. As is this shot below which shows them ordering new furniture from big box companies.

As an architect, you can see Leslie's design influences, in the space as well with a mix of modern, traditional and industrial like the glass block wall, oriental rugs and architectural lights.

Jules apartment, with help by her decorator Ron, is totally her...expensive and flashy! Very modern and minimalist with no antiques. The colors are feminine and current to the pastels that were popular at that time in the 80's.  Also note the unique pieces like the neon Billy Idol wall art and the repurposed coffee table made of concrete risers that show she has some edge to her personality.

Kirby and Kevin's apartment definitely represents two bachelors post college! But I'd say it has more of Kevin's influence with the boho color scheme and eclectic mix of decor items including record album's, bongos, and let's not forget the coffin! He is a writer and has a poster of, I'm assuming, his idol Woody Allen over the mantle so right away you know he is a lovelorn romantic.

I couldn't find any images of Wendy's new apartment....but it was traditional, classic and comfortable just like her. I have always loved her quote and thought of it myself when I spent the first night in my house.

"Yea... ya wanna know what's great? Last night I woke up in the middle of the night to make myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich... and ya know, it was my kitchen, it was my refrigerator, it was my apartment... and it was the BEST peanut butter and jelly sandwich that I have had in my entire life!"

Modern Life Concept House by Elle Decor

I cannot wait to see the Modern Life Concept House by Elle Decor! Well, see it online at least. I wish I could see it in person! They asked eight designers (Katie Leede, Lee Kleinhelter, Anthony Todd, etc.) to design various rooms like any showhouse but the designers were paired with over a dozen retailers and used their products in the rooms. Here is a sneak peak at some of the designer's sketches. It opens May 25th to the public.

This Week I...

Did something that I use to do ALL the time when I first moved here and lived downtown and now I'm sad to say I NEVER do it.....I got up early and went walking downtown for both exercise and to take photos. I forget how much I love to do that!!! And it is so easy and right there for me to do all the time. [Sigh.] I love to watch all the various tradesmen at work....painters, ironsmiths, plasterers, etc. Here are some pics I took (granted with my iPhone...didn't want to look like-God forbid, a tourist!-with my big ol' Nikon D60!)...

Went out to Folly Beach to meet a new client. It is like going to a whole different town! Which is kinda refreshing...but makes me wish I knew how to surf.

Went to a Spoletto concert at The Cistern to hear Ketch & Critter.

Are you familiar? If not...enjoy!

Want to thank CountryLiving.com for asking Eclectic to participate in their "50 Things To Do This Summer in 50 States" article. They have a tip for every state....check it out....lots of great info!

Bought some vintage Frye boots with my birthday money. I'm sure you are thinking "Boots, this time of year? That girl is crazy!" Or am I??? Best time to buy boots because no one else is!

Local folks be sure to come out to the SOS Memorial Day Party featuring Gaslight Street, Five Way Friday and BOCA at The Lighthouse...support a great cause while having loads of fun!!!

Happy Memorial Day!

Interior Therapy

Have you been watching Interior Therapy with Jeff Lewis?

He makes most of his clients cry. And not at the reveal.

But I could not love that man any more. Anyone that can get away with that much verbal abuse and say that many inappropriate things and yet somehow you still like him is beyond me!

I'm just wondering if there will be a season two because after seeing what he says about these people to the  camera, I'm wondering if anyone else will have the guts to sign up! But man...I sure hope they do!!!

And then there is always Zoila...

I recently had a client ask me to find her a clock for her newly remodeled kitchen. I don't even own a watch and I am not a fan of clocks on the wall so I panicked but knew I would comply, it is her home after all! In search of a clock that wouldn't make me cringe, I looked everywhere! And low and behold...I found one!

At Marshall's no less.

The only issue was it was a non-functioning clock, it was merely decorative. So I took it to the one and only clock man in town and he made it work.

Look how well it ties in with the coffee table...
(This picture makes me laugh...not at all finished for the record and those sad pillows without pillow forms. I really need to hurry and get on it with some quality after shots!)

The Money Pit

One of the greatest movie scenes of all time!!!

Please tell me you have seen this movie? It is a classic. And classic Tom Hanks. I can't tell you how many time my clients reference The Money Pit. And I can't tell you how many times I reference The Money Pit! "Two weeks" that is how long it will take, two weeks. lol If you are one of the 21 year old babies who read my blog and have never seen this movie, please do yourself a favor and rent it! I'm not sure if you can get it on your new fangled iPad so you might have to drive down to a Blockbuster. Just kidding. Kinda. Seriously, a damn good movie!

Here are some of the good quotes....

 Walter: Ahh, home crap home!

Walter: Here lies Walter Fielding. He bought a house, and it killed him.

Water Fielding: Do you know how hard it is to find a really good carpenter? Besides, I think he's got a brother who's a plumber!
Anna Crowley: Really? A brother who's a plumber?
Water Fielding: I think so.
Anna Crowley: Do you think I should sleep with him?
Water Fielding: Maybe just this once.

Big News

So I've been taunting you with my big news and here it is....I'm opening a shop!!!

[Let's pause a sec for the cheers and applause....maybe even a lil' confetti falling from the sky.]

I think part of my delay in telling you is my shock that it is actually happening! A lifetime dream coming true! It will be called "Eclectic"-part design studio and part home decor shop where I will be selling home furnishings including furniture, lighting, art, accessories and more. The design studio will be very user-friendly so customers will be able to access it themselves. And the retail will be a mix of Eclectic Creations (custom items that I design and/or repurpose as well as items that I collaborate with local artisans to create), Eclectic Finds (things I collect from antique shops, flea markets, etc.) and Eclectic Picks (products that I have hand selected from chosen vendors).  I feel that this unique blend of products will be unlike anything currently in the marketplace. And in case you are wondering, yes, I will still have my interior design business!

Eclectic is located at 875 Coleman Blvd next to Royal Hardware (where Belva's Flowers use to be). It is taking longer than expected (as these things always do) but I hope to be open sometime in June.

Here is a before shot...
(You know how I love rough before shots!)

Here is during shot mid up-fit...

I'll show you some after shots when I'm done! Or better yet, stop in and see for yourself! And I promise to keep you updated on the progress. Now you know why I have been so bad about blogging...I've been a lil' busy! :)

This Week I...

Here is a design plan I worked on for a client's kitchen...

And her craft room...

Went to a benefit for Operation Home

I loved the industrial feel and as always, I am a sucker for round paper lanterns!

Went to the Rickshaw Trunk Show at Novel. Surprisingly didn't buy a thing for myself! It was tough.

Checked in on a client's home....getting close!
You can see where the reclaimed wood beams will go...

Tile in the guest bath...(hard to see with the plastic over it...still painting)

Master bath

This was a bittersweet moment...moving my office out of my house.

I've got a big announcement for ya on Monday. Lots of you local folks already know but for those of you that don't...it's really good!!!

If you are local head out to the 6th Annual First Flush Festival on Sunday....lots of good music!

Have a great weekend!!!
